crazy paradise 2022 started on Saturday at St. Augustine Amphitheater in St. Augustine, FL with performances by McGee of Umphrey, Saladand more.
As the late afternoon sun beat down on the seaside town and fans decked out in “Tacky Tourists” entered the amphitheater, Flamingosis started the day with a dance party on the Front Porch stage. “You hear that Brooklyn bodega music,” the up-and-coming New York producer told the audience as he experimented with material from his latest album, 2021. day maker.
Gray clouds briefly arrived and dusted the audience with a cooling mist as funky sonic explorers Lettuce took the stage for the first set of the weekend on the amphitheater stage. Fresh off their eighth studio album, Unify, Adam Deish (drums, percussion), Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff (guitar), Erick “Jesus” Coomes (low), Ryan Zoidis (saxophone), Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet) and Nigel Room (keyboards, vocals) weaved in new material and a satisfying selection of fan favorites for the St. Augustine crowd.

Beginning with a tour through Unify“RVA Dance” by and a song “Happy Birthday” for Bloom, Lettuce took fans on a sonic journey, moving from light and airy textures to punchy hip-hop beats with patented fluidity. From happy, slow tension and release with Shmeeans at the helm to fearless jazz tangents propelled by Deitch to soul-cleansing, sung indoor renditions of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” (Tears For Fears) and “Don’t Change For Me” (Nigel Hall) to a powerful “Phyllis” and closing the set, the sinuous performance showcased all the subtleties of talent and style that have made Lettuce one of the most popular live bands. more exciting on the road.
As the team returned to the amphitheater after Lettuce’s performance, fans strolled through the scenic gardens to the porch stage for another set of Flamingosis. After the break dancing night, the Fool’s Paradise audience returned to the main stage for a two-set performance by Umphrey’s McGee.
The prog-jam sextet wasted no time getting to work, creating a bit of “Room To Breathe” on the St. Augustine stage before welcoming the “In The Kitchen” crowd for a long meal of improvisation. The unfinished jam eventually found its way into a pair of “White Man’s Moccasins” before the band channeled the energy of “Conduit” to add a heavier nuance to the proceedings. After a dream flight through “The Fussy Dutchman”, Umphrey’s debut set with a “Mail Package” that swelled and contracted thanks to rumbling bass work from Ryan Stassik and a heavy foot backbeat of Kris Myers.
The band returned after intermission with an expansive “Cut The Cable” which set a heavier, more metal-influenced tone for the final set of the evening. The darkness grew deeper as Umphrey worked through “Wizard Burial Ground” and “2×2”, each allowing Jake Cinninger to add his razor-sharp side to the guitar. The band dove deeper into the warped depths from there, rounding out the set with a thrilling, non-stop running segment featuring renditions of “Plunger”, “Andy’s Last Beer” and a climactic “Ocean Billy”.
As the curfew approached, Brendan Bayliss told a grateful crowd that the band would skip the encore break and use every second of the remaining seven minutes to play. With that, the band sprinted into a heavy “Kula” before dropping back into the unfinished “In The Kitchen” from the first set to end the rocking musical meal, the telling lyrics “I wanted to know if you’ll still be here tomorrow” garnering a great cheer from the throng of fools’ audience prepared for another day in paradise on Sunday.
